Expressive
Expressive arts
Arts that create a mood or express an idea are called expressive. Often times you will see abstract art or non-objective art that would fall under this purpose. Non-Objective is an especially good example of expressive art since it is not Religious, Functional, Narrative or Persuasive.

Religious/Ceremonial
Religious or ceremonial art
These are artworks or monuments that reflect a culture's religion or ceremonial traditions. An example is the totem pole. The history of totem pole carving and the religious signification of the symbols is centuries old.
Other examples could include the Tomb Paintings in Egyptian art (these could also be considered Narrative because they tell the story of the Pharoh who is buried there.
In a few thousand years or so, if people were looking back at OUR culture, what kinds of objects do you think they would consider to be Ceremonial or religious from our time? http://www.totem-pole.net/photos.html

Functional arts
Everyday artwork that is useful in some way is called Functional. An example would be Pottery not unlike the dishes and mugs you probably have at home. Other examples would be weavings for rugs or clothing. Architecture (buildings) might also be considered functional because we go to school in them, we live in them, we shop in them etc. Furniture has design and function. Maybe you picked out your bedroom set or the coverings that go on them because you liked the way they looked. Same with clothing. We're attracted to the design but they also serve a functional purpose.
Narrative art
Art is created for different reasons. Much of what we learn about past cultures and ways of life is through their art work. For example, Cave Paintings showed what primitive cultures hunted and gave clues about the tools they used. Famous events in history are recorded in the arts such as Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, American, 1816-1868. These types of art would be called Narrative because they tell information or a story.
Persuasive
Persuasive arts are like advertisements or editorial cartoons. They have a message to them that try to influence you to like something, dislike something, or sway your opinion.
