Name tangle...Use lines, patterns, contrast, value and shape to create a design out of your name. Think about how you are going to make your name stand out. If the name has a lot of pattern in it, then you might want to make the background more simple. If your background has a lot of pattern, make the name stand out by colouring it in solid.
Subjects in art:
fold your paper like you would a brochure and then fold it in half so that you have six squares to work with. Put a "frame" or border around three of these squares. In the framed areas you will illustrate the subjects of portrait landscape, and still life. In the spaces where there are no frames you will create non-objective designs. In all squares you need to think about how you are going to show the elements of art such as value, texture, colour, form, shape, etc....
The work at the left is by a student. It is unfinished, but you can see the still life, portrait and landscape and two non objective spaces completed.

Egyptian tomb paintings.
Egyptian tomb paintings can be both Narrative or religious in purpose. They're narrative because they tell a story about the person burried there and their beliefs in gods and goddesses. Their artwork is concerned mostly with the afterlife though so it's main purpose is religious/ceremonial. Notice the way the human figure is represented. The head and legs are in profile while the torso and eye is in front view.
Egyptian Monuments:
The Great Sphinx and the Pyramids are shown in the photograph. Other Monuments we looked at in class include.
Greek pottery
The amphora vessel was used for storing liquids. Note the smaller neck.
The Kylix was used for drinking
The Krater was used for mixing oils and liquids. Note the larger mouth for it.

Greek inspiration in American Architecture
Where do you think this is?
What kind of columns do you see here?
Why do you think American architecture is inspired by Greek architecture?
What other traditions do you think we carry on today from ancient Greece?

Roman Architecture: Roman architecture is characterized by the arch. The arch is one of the most stable structures because of it's ability to disperse the weight of the object evenly in support.
Aqueducts /7th-grade-assignments.html
These are large structures made with a series of arches. Arches were important in Roman architecture because of the stregnth. Uses: From 312 BC to AD 226, aqueducts were used to bring water to a distance of about 57 miles. 38,000,000 gallons of water were brought to Rome by ten or more aqueducts. Some of the aqueducts made were not really used at all because today, aqueducts are not that accurate.

Roman Colliseum
Construction of the Colosseum began under the rule of the Emperor Vespasian[3] in around 70–72AD. The site chosen was a flat area on the floor of a low valley between the Caelian, Esquiline and Palatine Hills, through which a canalised stream ran. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colosseum
Medieval art
Originating in 12th century France and lasting into the 16th century, Gothic architecture was known during the period as "the French Style," (Opus Francigenum), with the term Gothic first appearing during the latter part of the Renaissance. Its characteristic features include the pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress. We also see the Rose window and gargoyles featured on the cathedrals.
Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities and to a less prominent extent, private dwellings.
It is in the great churches and cathedrals and in a number of civic buildings that the Gothic style was expressed most powerfully, its characteristics lending themselves to appeal to the emotions.

How do you think the Cathedral would appeal to emotions?
